The simplistic layout is merely a smokescreen for some hilarious manga, arranged in such a way that, unlike most manga, it can be read a little bit at a time, allowing the reader to enjoy a little and put the book down instead of feeling like it has to be read allin one sitting. Anyone causally flipping through a volume of Azumanga Daioh at their local comics shop or book store that might think that creator Kiyohiko Azuma was taking the easy way out of putting together a manga would be dead wrong. Instead of the kind of loose panels (or, on the case of some manga, non-panel) layouts you're used to, AD has a uniformity that could be easily mistaken as boring, giving an early impression of an uninspired project. The series is compiled from a series of four panel strips, which means the book's layout immediately looks a lot different. Azumanga Daioh is a little different than the manga you're used to.
